Modeling impacts of European renewable energy policies on the emissions of mercury

چکیده
This paper presents the methodology and results of impact assessment of renewable energy policies on atmospheric emissions of mercury in Europe. The modeling exercise described here was carried out within the EU’s FP7 EnerGEO Project and involves an interaction of several models. First, a set of energy scenarios has been developed with the REMix model that simulates different levels of penetration of renewable energies in the European power sector. The energy scenarios were input to the GAINS model, which prepared projections of mercury releases to the atmosphere through 2050, based on the current air pollution control policies in each country. Data on mercury emissions from individual sectors were subsequently disaggregated to the fine spatial resolution with the use of the LOTOS-EUROS model. Finally, the dispersion of mercury in the atmosphere was computed by the chemistry transport model, implemented to the air quality system Polyphemus. The simulations provided information on changes in concentrations and depositions of various forms of mercury over Europe. Scenarios that simulate a substantial expansion of renewable energies within the power sector indicate extensive co-benefits for mercury abatement due to restructuring of energy system and changes in fuel-mix. The potential for mercury reductions in Europe depends on the rate of fuel switches and renewable technology deployment, but is also influenced by the stringency and timing of the air quality measures. The overall scope for co-benefits is therefore higher in regions relying on coal combustion as a major energy source.

Increasing electric vehicles usage, as a promising solution for environmental issues, might have unexpected implications, since it entails some changes in different sectors and scales in energy system. In this respect, this research aims at investigating the long-term impacts of electric vehicles deployment on Iran's energy system. Accordingly, Iran's energy system was analyzed by LEAP model in...
متن کاملA Review on Environmental aspects of geothermal energ
New energy technologies, along with the benefits, are associated with challenges and Difficulties. Geothermal energy as one of the renewable energies is a clean and sustainable energy source, yet its development still has some impact on the environment such as: greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, surface and groundwater contamination, subsidence, and seismicity. This paper provides a bri...
متن کاملAssessing the Effects of Green Tax Policy on CO2 Emission with Emphasis on Renewable Energy Development (Case study of D8 Countries)
In recent years, fossil energy consumption has increased because of economic growth and this has led to carbon dioxide emissions and environmental crises. Governments struggle to solve this problem by appropriate policies such as green or environmental tax policies. This policy is based on costs and can control pollution and increase renewable energy consumption as a substitute for fossil ener...
متن کاملAssessing Economic, Social, and Environmental Impacts of Wind Energy in Iran with Focus on Development of Wind Power Plants
As a key economic element, energy plays an important role in the development of societies. Economic growth and its urgent need for energy highlight the need for optimal energy use. Wind energy is an energy source that has become an increasingly common source of electricity. In this study, socio-economic impacts of the cost of electricity generated by wind power plants were assessed with Iran as...
